Inspired Interiors With Dulux Colour Trend 2018 : Essential

Dulux recently released its 2018 Colour Trends 'Balance' with four carefully curated themes which will see natural, earthy colours and textures coming to the fore with more of an appreciation for the comfort of imperfection.

“As we let go of the idea of perfection in both our homes and other aspects in our lives, we are instead seeking to create balanced, harmonious interiors that stimulate the senses, while simultaneously allowing us to relax and retreat,” says Dulux Colour Expert Davina Harper.

This concept is very evident in the theme 'Essential' - a calm, nurturing palette inspired by the Nordic tradition of Hygge. Comprising soft warm shades of leather, putty and cooler green-greys, Essential’s colours are calming and nurturing with stronger highlights of blues and aging materials in rusted tones.

I personally love all things handmade, that is why I chose the slogan 'Handcrafted Lifestyle' when I started Cotton & Clay.  There is something intrinsically valuable about owning an item that has been handmade. I love the imperfect nature of it, and being able to appreciate the detail and creative spirit that went into creating it. And that is what has drawn me to the 'Essential' theme.

It is about creating a neutral and relaxed space and adding character using imperfect finishes such as handcrafted ornaments and natural textures. What is not to love?

I am very excited to see the Essential trend make its way into NZ interiors in 2018 and I have a feeling it will be very popular. It has a timeless quality about it and gives you the freedom to create a neutral palette that can be built upon through out the seasons. Just feast your eyes on this beautiful palette! It is absolutely swoon-worthy! (Is that even a word? I think in this case it should be!)

Here are a few styling tips on how to incorporate this gorgeous trend in your home.

Living

Make colour and texture the hero with simple shapes and minimalist style.

Bedroom

Liven up a neutral look with different textures. Imperfect edges on textiles and a mix of materials will give your space character and ensure your neutral colour scheme is never dull.

Dining

Our search for a more authentic existence inspires a new-found appreciation for natural and recycled materials. Make use of artisanal accents like hand-glazed ceramics, or natural linen.

Kitchen

Add a bold colour to your grey scheme to create a focal point within a space or highlight an architectural detail. Carry this accent colour through to your interior by adding a few decor items in this colour palette.
