Meet the Maker : Mungo Design

Meet the Maker : Mungo Design

Have you ever wondered what makes a towel so special? Aren’t they all pretty much the same? I have always figured if the label says 100% cotton and the towel looks nice and fluffy, then it has to be decent right?

And yet after a few washes they usually turn scratchy, they are never very absorbent, and in this NZ climate, they take ages to dry!

So when I discovered the Mungo Mill and their beautiful woven products, I was very curious to find out more!

Using the timeless art of weaving, Mungo is a unique textile company that creates a wide range of quality linens, throws, blankets, bedding, towels and apparel. Part of their ethos is sourcing quality natural fibres, they do not mass produce and their fabrics are constructed to last.

I have to be honest, when I unpacked the first Mungo towel, I was quite sceptical about whether it would be the right towel for the job!

Don’t get me wrong, they have vibrant colours and the softest texture, but they are much more compact than the towels I am used to.

However, as soon as I started using them, I realised that these towels are a game-changer!

Because of the high-quality natural cotton that is used, they are very absorbent and durable. And unlike the conventional terry towels that I had used previously, the flat weave towel dries faster between uses, stays fresher for longer and require less water and detergent to wash.

These towels and other high quality products are woven at the Mungo boutique weavery and at their Working Weaving Museum based in the seaside town of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.

Here all of their sampling is done on antique 19th century Hattersley looms – the “beating heart” of Mungo.

Mungo is a company with the rare ability to create fabrics from the inception of design to the final product. And as they employ and empower the local community, they ensure that their products are from an ethical and quality beginning.

Mungo creates exquisite fabrics which are both useful and enduring and bring beauty into people’s lives. I feel very honoured to sell some of their products in the Cotton & Clay online store! If you would like to invest in quality bath towelskitchen towels, or throws, we’ve got you covered!
